1994년 연간 전체 빌보드 핫 5위 곡 (Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1994) 머라이어 캐리 최고의 앨범 3집 수록곡 Hero (히어로)는 원래 글로리아 에스테판이 부를 예정이었다. 영화 Hero의 사운드 트랙으로 사용될 예정이었지만 취소되면서 가사와 멜로디를 머라이어 캐리의 목소리에 맞게 팝과 R&B스럽게 미디엄 템포 발라드로 다시 만들고 발표한 것이다.
결혼 한 해였던 1994년 3집 앨범 "뮤직 박스 (Music Box)"을 발매했다. 2집에서 자신의 보컬 능력을 최대한 쏟아 부었다가 평단의 비판을 받았던 머라이어는, 기교와 고음을 최대한 자제하고 갓 결혼한 신부의 수줍음을 대변이라도 하듯 달콤하고 섬세한 보컬을 선보였다. 감정면에서도 이전의 1, 2집 앨범에 비해 발전된 모습을 보였다. 그러나 그래미에서는 철저하게 머라이어를 외면하기 시작했다. 소속사 사장과의 결혼이 그래미에 부정적으로 비쳤을 것이라는 설이 지배적으로 남아있을 만큼 그래미는 데뷔 당시를 제외하고는 이후 15년간이나 머라이어를 후보에만 올리고 정작 상을 하나도 주지 않는 모습을 보였다.
그러나 상업적인 성공은 엄청났다. 이 앨범의 첫싱글이었던 "Dreamlover"는 빌보드 싱글차트에서 8주간이나 1위를 하는 저력을 보였으며, "Hero", "Without You/Never Forget You(더블 싱글)", "Anytime You Need A Friend" 등 발매 싱글이 연이어 히트를 기록하면서 앨범의 판매량 또한 꾸준히 증가했으며, 미국내 1000만장과 전 세계 3200만장이라는 판매고를 올리기에 이르렀다. 빌보드 핫 4주간 1위를 했다. 뿐만 아니라 14개 국가에서 차트 1위와 당시 판매량 1위를 기록하기도 했으며 한국에서도 100만장이라는 판매고를 올렸다. 작품성과 상업성 모두 인정 받은 노래로 이후 머라이어는 많은 여가수들의 롤 모델이 되었다.
