1994년 연간 전체 빌보드 핫 16위 곡 (Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 1994) 머라이어 캐리 3집 수록곡으로 원곡은 1970년 영국 락 밴드 Badfinger의 소프트 락 곡이었다. 다음해 1971년 Harry Nilsson이 리메이크했고, 다시 머라이어 캐리가 리메이크해 크게 성공을 거둔 노래로 빌보드핫 3위를 비롯해 많은 나라에서 1위를 한 글로벌 히트곡이다.
밴드 Badfinger의 1970년 2집 앨범 수록곡이었고 Peter William Ham (27 April 1947 – 24 April 1975)과 Thomas Evans Jr (5 June 1947 – 19 November 1983)가 만들었는데, 이 둘은 모두 자살로 생을 마감했다. Badfinger 그룹의 데뷔 앨범엔 비틀즈 멤버 폴 매카트니가 곡을 주었고 비틀즈가 데뷔시켜 주었다는 설이 있다. without you는 머라이어 캐리 이전에도 다른 가수들이 즐겨 불렀고 먼저 ‘해리 닐슨’이 72년 리메이크 발표되었는 그래서 많은 사람들이 해리 닐슨의 곡으로 알고 있다. 해리 닐슨 외 ‘에어서플라이’ 버전도 유명하지만 역시 머라이어 캐리 버전이 가장 큰 성공을 거두었다. 또 Badfinger의 원곡과 해리 닐슨의 곡은 가사가 조금 다르다. 머라이어 캐리의 곡은 해리닐슨의 노래를 기준으로 리메이크 했다. 덧붙여 이 노래를 만든 Pete Ham, Tom Evans은 1972년 영국 아카데미 베스트 작사/작곡 상을 수상했다(Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically)
