미국의 국가(National anthem of the United States)인 성조기(星條旗, The Star-Spangled Banner, 별이 빛나는 깃발)는 법률가이자 3류시인이었던 프랜시스 스콧 키(Francis Scott Key)가 1814년에 쓴 시‘별이 빛나는 깃발’에 1780년에 발표한 존 스태퍼드 스미스의 곡을 넣어 완성된 것이다.
프랜시스 스콧 키의 《맥헨리 요새의 방어》(The Defense of Fort McHenry)에 처음으로 실렸고 그 해에 이 노래가 낱장 악보로 다시 출판되면서 제목도 바뀌었던 것이다. The Star-Spangled Banner은 1889년에 해군으로부터 인정 받고, 1916년에 백악관으로부터 인정 받고 1931년 당시 미국의 대통령이었던 후버에 의해 미국의 공식 국가로 인정받게 된다.
미국 해군 출신인 존 필립 수자라는 사람이 같은 뜻의 노래를 행진곡으로 바꾼 곡도 유명하다.
현재 The Star-Spangled Banner은 미국인들의 지지도가 30%가 되지 않는데, 이 이유는 4절까지 되는 긴 곡인데다가, 어려운 박자가 많아 외우기도 힘들기 때문이다.
